OOC: Here's the reasons why we chose the winners we did for From The Ashes. I'll try and keep on top of this stuff for big matches to help people understand our way of judging as well as keep a track record on our judging staff to make sure we stay consistent. The following were the three hardest matches to judge. The judging was done by Frank Washington, Robert Garland, and Daniel Smart
Match #1 -
Kruzer vs. Prince Assad -
Garland's call:
Garland votes Assad -
I feel like Assad's character is more consistent while Kruzer seems to come off more heel-ish than I think is intended. While Kruzer's playing more of a tweener, his shifts in attitude seem to linger to far to the boundaries of a heel persona. I feel like I would like to see Kruzer explore the character a bit more in development pieces. I would love to read the reasons as to why his character comes off the way he does.
Frank's call:
Frank votes Assad -
Assad stays on point in his 2 RPs and plays to his alignment well, an arrogant foreign heel. Kruzer's 1st wasn't bad but it was more flash than substance. The 2nd RP really did nothing for the match as it managed to both nosell Assad's response and the concept of time - at the same time. The Midget added nothing to the match and come across as corny at best - definitely something that would've flown as a segment but not an RP. Kruzer also seemed to dance between face and heel which came across as inconsistant. Assad has his own mistakes with some spelling errors and the delievery could've been cleaner but he hit the important points when needed and stuck to alignment.
Match #2 -
Frankie vs. KONSTANTINE vs. Maxwell -
Garland's call:
Garland votes Cocheese -
I feel that Cocheese had more focus on his opponents while Maxwell and KONSTANTINE seemed a bit scattered. While Cocheese contantly talked about murdering his opponents, Konstantine pushed a bit of his focus on Frank Washington and looking to the future while Maxwell seemed to work a bit too much with his personal storylines. It was the fourth promos that really sealed the decision.
Frank's call:
Frank votes Cocheese -
Cocheese killed it this round. Halfway through Schnieder kept things really close but fell behind with his third which was (in my view) a scramble to beat the buzzer to get the extention. KONSTANTINE started out weaker, he used 2 RPs to do what he could've easily done in one and while content certainly wasn't lacking neither of the first two were quite "complete" having focused on one guy at a time. KONSTANTINE did play catchup in his 3rd and 4th and while he made a valiant effort it wasn't enough to overcome the early deficit. Schiender finished strong in his 4th to go with a good 1st and 2nd but Cocheese "played all 4 quaters" to get the win. 2nd and 3rd place is murky and I can't quite say definitively who should be 2nd or 3rd.
Match #3 -
Artemis vs. Shawna -
Smart votes Arty -
Smart thinks that Arty had more of a through line through her promos. He feels that she had one major story to tell through her promos while Shawna's three promos were more stand-alone. But, both had high match relevance.
Frank votes Shawna -
Looking at the work Shawna was strong throughout. She started out strong and finished strong. Artemis got stronger as the RPing period went along but I honestly think when you compare the total work Artemis doesnt quite make it to the finish line. the 1st RP imo was weak considering the match and the mostly developmental nature of the piece, don't get me wrong it's always good to see growth but it didn't really do much for the match when you compare it to Shawna's. Looking at a 3-3 RP split... I have to give it to who put out the stronger work overall
Garland votes Shawna (Tie breaker) -
I feel like I agree more with Frank than with Smart, however I was split the whole way. While I do believe Arty had more of a consistency, Frank's thought on her first promo being a bit weak does tilt the board in Shawna's favor. That being said, I believe the handler of Arty was stretched due to writing promos for the two biggest matches of the card. Perhaps that was a bit unfair.
